 Poster for "Watchmen" |
This weekend, "Watchmen," the first of the most-anticipated movies of 2009, has finally been released, which means comic book fans everywhere are rushing to their nearest silver screen to see the most celebrated graphic novel in the history of comics come to life. It's pretty smart of Warner Bros. to release this potential blockbuster in the month of March -- two full months ahead of the summer movie season -- with almost no competition (at least until "Monsters vs. Aliens" is released in a few weeks).
Speaking of the summer movie season (we'll just skip over April), here are this Summer's most popular films on my "must-see," "must-avoid," and "not-sure" lists:
(NOTE: All links lead to a trailer.)
Must See:
- "Public Enemies" (July 1) - More than a comic movie fan, I am, first and foremost, a fan of the gangster genre. And this one is from Michael Mann.
- "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" (June 24) - Duh!
- "Up" (May 29) - Pixar hasn't let me down, yet.
- "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (May 1) - It's Wolverine! C'mon!
- "Terminator Salvation" (May 21) - Looking forward to see Bale kick some D.P. ass -- I mean, terminators!
- "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" (Aug. 7) - Was a big fan as a kid, what can I say?
- "Inglourious Basterds" (Aug. 21) - Tarantino and Brad Pitt could be an interesting mix.
- "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" (July 17) - Haven't read any of the books, but I've seen all the movies!
- "Land of the Lost" (June 5) - I think I just have to.
- "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" (May 22) - For my kids!
- "Funny People" (July 31) - Judd Apatow delivered with "40 Year-Old-Virgin" and "Knocked Up"...
- "The Proposal" (June 12) - For my wife!
- "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" (July 1) - All about the kids, man.
- "Year One" (June 19) - Only because Harold Ramis is directing it.
Must Avoid:
- "Imagine That" (June 12) - Will Eddie Murphy ever learn? Seriously.
- "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" (June 12) - Over-the-top Travolta -- no thanks.
- "G-Force" (July 24) - Not telling the kids about this one.
- "H2" (Aug. 28) - Would rather check out Rob Zombie's horror music.
- "Final Destination: Death Trip 3D" (Aug. 14) - Never saw the first one.
Not Sure:
- "Angels & Demons" (May 15) - Love Tom Hanks, but wasn't crazy about "The Da Vinci Code."
- "Star Trek" (May 8) - This should be a "Duh!" on my Must-see list, but for some reason, it's not.
- "Bruno" (July 10) - Sacha Baron Cohen in "Borat" barely crossed the line. I have a feeling he'll leap right over in this one.
- "The Ugly Truth" (July 24) - Maybe for the wife.
