The holidays are finally over, but those calorie-laden meals you ate over the month of December are probably still sticking to your ribs. Well, at least that's the case for me. Though I've never been good at resolutions, this year I have finally decided to give the detox diet a try.
The word "detox" strikes the fear in me -- it brings to mind Janet Jackson's unique colonics (coffee enemas, anyone?) or languishing on diets of strange tonics or juices. Proponents of detoxification diets believe that it can help the body remove environmental and dietary toxins. There are even diets to target specific parts of the body or a specific toxin (such as the heavy metal detox diet).
Scientists disagree on whether the detox diet really works -- most agree that any prolonged type of dietary restriction could be dangerous. While I can't imagine surviving on mayple syrup and lemonade for any stretch of time, not all detox diets are so extreme.
Done with caution, elements of detox diets are simply sensible eating. Typically, detox diets means saying goodbye to sugar, dairy, wheat, gluten, caffeine, and a host of other dietary sins. While I'm not exactly ready to give up my daily coffee fix, giving up some of the other items in the common detox diet isn't as difficult as one would imagine. Most detox diets also encourage eating fruits, vegetables, rice, and whole grains -- sounds pretty delicious to me.
If you're considering purging some of the sinful foods you ate over the holidays, check out the Yahoo! Directory for detox tips, nutrition guidelines, and diet analysis tools. And if you have helpful tips on how to eat healthy, don't forget to share them in the comments box below.
