The venerable art of storytelling may have given way to more modern diversions such as watching TV and playing video games, but for the sippy cup set, fairy tales are still a big part of the day. Thanks to the Brothers Grimm, lucky toddlers and tykes are lulled to sleep each night with the soothing voice of mom or dad reading memorable stories.
Born in Germany in the late 1700s, Wilhelm and Jakob Grimm were linguists and serious fans of folk tales. In 1807, they began collecting traditional native stories in response to a growing interest in German folklore. Eventually, they documented more than 200 stories in several volumes, and many of the Grimms' more famous yarns have become storytime staples everywhere. Such classics Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, and Hansel and Gretel are well known and still get frequent readings. Other stories, such as Cinderella, Snow White, and Beauty and the Beast, are fully ensconced in world culture through sugar-coated adaptations by Disney. But parents should dig deeper into the Grimm collections. There are lesser-known gems in there that are sure to get the kids right to sleep -- and to inspire some very imaginative dreams.
