If you're a sports fan, there's always a sportscaster you just can't stand. Either he's an egregious homer, pulling for his team, or he's a know-it-all who's wrong more often than he's right. Or maybe he's one of those guys who won't shut up and let the game speak for itself. Whoever he is, you can develop a strange fondness for the grating voice behind the microphone. You know he's going to bug you, yet you look forward to the irritation. Tim McCarver is that guy for us. A decent Major League catcher for 21 seasons, McCarver started broadcasting in the '80s, and he hasn't stopped talking since. (Sportswriter Norman Chad once said of McCarver: "When you ask him the time, he'll tell you how a watch works.") To be fair, McCarver obviously has fans, as his long tenure as a World Series color analyst will attest. Still, we hope that today, on his 66th birthday, Tim gives us a present and sets down his microphone to let us watch the playoffs and the World Series in silence.

Oh wow. THANK YOU!!! I have always hated McCarver and Joe Buck both as broadcasters. I cannot fathom why FOX keeps them around. They are both far too loyal to their teams, and basically rooting for their rivals, for Network guys.
