We remember when it was cool to tattoo messages on the skin with sunscreen. Love notes to mom may never go out of style, but we know it's a sin to sun without protection. Yet all the pretty pigments in the beauty magazines seduce us. Bronze is the new black. But now that we're daubing anti-aging agents on our crows feet, we're looking for alternatives to UVB beds and conveniently forgotten sunscreen. Sunless tanners and airbrush tanning vivify the perpetually winter-skinned. But what if all the pale people embraced their milky roots? Even when ghost skin was in, women whitened their faces with arsenic to achieve the porcelain look. Beautiful reader, don't hide from the sun this summer. When you're reading your beach book or lazing by the pool, just remember to slather up beforehand. Bring enough sunscreen for a couple of applications, and make sure you're not allergic to your lotion. Someday, you'll be thankful that you remembered to wear sunscreen.

What do we do for Moonburn?

That woman is lucky to be alive.
I live in CA and this mania for a tan is horrifying. At 12, I went on a weekend with a school friend at Salton Sea. Got a 2nd degree burn over my fish white body and had "tan marks" for 3 years until it faded.
BTW - if you do get a burn soak in a tub with a cupful of white vinegar added. It stops the pain and you can keep doing it later with a wet washcloth that you pour vinegar on and pat, pat, pat. No you don't smell like a salad.
