From wearing leaded aprons to viewing our innards in black and white, many of us have experienced the standard medical X-ray imaging process. Now U.S. airport security is using this century-old technology in a new and revealing way. Instead of scanning your belongings and stepping through a metal detector, you might be virtually stripped by a Backscatter X-ray machine before hopping on a plane. The process would reveal any potentially concealed weapons and your nude body. The airport screeners may keep straight faces, but we wonder if our exposed bodies will spark voyeuristic chuckles when they see us and our loved ones naked. Is it less invasive than the old-school bouncer pat down? Is this sacrifice of privacy for the sake of security worthwhile? It's a tough call. We just hope that real X-ray specs won't be the next innovation -- people watching at the airport will be forever changed.

I really never fly but i do think that we needn't get undressed and "show off" for sercurity.just use a metal detector, and then if you found anything then strip serch if not then dont make people feel uncomfratable

The airlines thought they were losing passengers before...

Freedom isn't a guarantee of absolute safety, freedom is a risk, it's dangerous, and sad to say it seems like most people just aren't cut out for freedom these days and want to be coddled and protected so they run right into the arms of the wolves... Our nations founders had it right, now just look at how far we've sunken....

This is and would be an invasion of our privacy and not really necessary especially for young children of America, and if children have to go thru this x-ray this would be against everything that the law has stated in the past few years about exploiting children publicly, on the internet etc. what are these people thinking obviously not much. They need to reconsider their thinking and go back to the drawing board and come up with some other way to scan for potentially concealed weapons.
The US Airport Security Screeners needs to get off their butts and do their job instead of just sitting/standing around and do the old fashion PAT DOWN.
I don't agree with their thinking.

"While this might not be for you some people might opt for it. Given a choice between the standard line or maybe a quicker line. I would take the shorter and quicker line any day. It might make us more aware of how out of shape we are as a people, and maybe it will encourage some people to lose that extra ten pounds and keep it off."
Lol. Retarded comment. It has nothing to do with that -- it has to do with the invasion of personal privacy.

If it comes to this, I think I might consider investing in railroad stock. I think this takes security a bit too far.

No one wants to consider the most effective alternative: get Uncle Sam out of the airport security business altogether.
Airlines have every incentive to provide adequate safety. The planes cost enormous sums of money. Pilot training is very expensive. And most importantly, allowing one's customers to get blown up tends to drive away business.
If we re-introduce private insurance into the equation, airlines who fail to provide security will not only pay higher premiums for the increased risks they're taking, they would lose business from travelers who demand safer passage.
It would also expose people to something we are losing rapidly in this country: the freedom to choose. This solution sure beats paying billions to the TSA so that it can pretend to protect us from terrorists.

I think this is an outrage. Its absolutely ridiculous. Soon people will have no such thing as "privacy". If their machines cant pick up weapons, then I definitely agree with mysnowbabiesjmj. Do the old fashioned pat down! I will never fly again if it comes down to them seeing me naked. Hit the drawing board guys, because not many people are going to agree with this one!
