 Walt Disney |
"What Disney seemed to know was that while there is very little grown-up in every child, there is a lot of child in every grown-up." - Eric Sevareid of CBS News on the night of Walt's death.
Walt Disney wasn't your average corporate president. He was a dreamer with high ideals and the spirit of a child. He was like a big kid. What else would you call someone who actually built a railroad in his backyard? This humble undertaking provided major inspiration for the beloved Disneyland. Always an innovator, Uncle Walt aimed to reinvent the entertainment industry by adding feature animation and new technologies, such as audio-animatronics, to its repertoire. But because he was so driven to constantly explore new ideas, he often had to dig into his own pockets to invest in these ventures and was rarely without financial burden. Rather than focusing on how to make a quick buck, Disney concerned himself with how to make the world, well... happy. We think he did a swell job. Today, 40 years after Disney's death, we're still celebrating his dreams and his legacy.

Walter Elias Disney created many things (characters, animation, theme parks, etc.) that we all loved, even me; but do you know that he was a virulent racist and anti-Semite? He despised blacks and Jews more than anyone else in show business. For many years he would not hire any Jew for a management position. That changed when he was finally, but reluctantly, persuaded that at least some Jews could add some needed management expertise.

Yes, there's known issues like this, but "more than anyone else in show business"? That's a bit of a stretch, don't ya think?
And not to say Walt was in the right, but our society was in a much different place in the 30s and 40s. So to outcast him and call him a "racist" is a bit unfair w/o mentioning that fact.
