It's not easy becoming a rock star. You need a hip look, you must exude coolness, and have an original sound. But the most improbable rock superheroes, Jack Black and Kyle Gass, snagged their fame without any of these traits. This jokester duo started when they met in The Actors' Gang theatre group. Gass lured Black into guitar playing, and in 1994 the two dawned on the L.A. music scene as Tenacious D. Black's salacious antics on top of folk metal with sarcastically vulgar lyrics created a notable following -- enough for HBO to give them their self-titled show. Soon after, they opened for big acts like Beck and Pearl Jam, booked headliner stadium gigs, and recorded with Dave Grohl. Paying tribute to their classic rock roots, they also performed with metal megastar Ronnie James Dio and ‘70s crooner Meat Loaf. Next week, they top off their success with the opening of "Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny." So, wannabe rockers, flaunt that pot belly, forget about your receding hairline, and follow Tenacious D's unlikely road to rock stardom. No joke.
