 What do you see? |
Hermann Rorschach set the wheels of the imagination spinning when he created his eponymous, and infamous, inkblot test. Suddenly, symmetrical blots grew limbs, eyes, and devilish or angelic features -- depending on who viewed the image. In the picture to your right, we saw a goat face, a fox, a praying mantis, elephants, and pelvic bones. Dear reader, what do you see? And what in tarnation might our reactions reveal about our personalities? It's all fun and games until our idiosyncrasies are scrutinized. Sure, we tend to project our emotions onto objects. But maybe Rorschach projected a little of his own mind onto his patients and his controversial test. Maybe he was a disgruntled artist. Maybe he just loved the children's game, klecksographie -- where the point is to create pretty, symmetrical inkblots -- a little too much. After all, symmetry appeals to folks. And since you can find symmetry everywhere: faces, animals, leaves, butterflies, reflections on a lake, it's no wonder each of us has a different interpretation of the blot. Still, there's something about these tests that keeps us coming back for more. Could it be we actually like discovering what we see in those pretty ink stains?
