Though you may not see extreme unicycling televised this summer, MUni, or mountain unicycling, is a sport that's rolling up some dedicated athletes. Unicycles can be a rewarding alternative to bicycles and learning how to ride them off-road is the next spin of the wheel. MUni cycles have thick, knobbed tires akin to a mountain bike's, a simple frame, and shocks that allow them to maneuver easily over rocks, ice, and snow. New Zealander unicyclist Ken Looi has cycled 565 miles through the Alps and visited Laos and Nepal astride his unicycle. Lars Clausen completed the first unicycle tour across America's 50 states, traveling 9,136 miles and averaging 10 mph. These one-wheeled athletes take their cycling seriously, but they're not so single-minded that they can't delight in the curious gaze of a passer-by who sees this oddity rolling through town.

Nice... I saw a guy unicycling from school a couple of days ago, with a backpack and stuff... It looked funny, but i guess it could be a real sport as well. I should try it one day.

I used to ride one when I was a kid. Very fun to ride, a bit of a trick to learn how, but once mastered it really is a far more rewarding ride than its two-wheeled cousin. Still, I don't know about the idea of riding it over mountain trails or snow. That may be pushing it just a bit.

Averaging 10 mph sounds like a bit of a stretch. Remember, there are no gears on these things.

Hey I saw a guy in Moab on a unicycle working the 4 wheel obstacles (4 to 4 foot drop off straight down). He was fun to watch. Talked to him and he is using an off road unicycle.

With a big wheel and short crank arms, 10mph isn't hard to achieve. Many of us can hit 20+mph (scary!) on one wheel.

Wow thats pretty cool. But I think that it would be really hard to do. To much work than riding a regular bike. What will people think of next!!
