Do you know how junk email got the name "spam"? While the name does make reference to it, those bothersome emails are not the namesake of the canned mystery meat. Give up? Right, you probably weren't expecting the "Spanish Inquisition." The term spam most likely stems from a Monty Python sketch in which a waitress rattles off menu items, almost all of which include Spam, to an appalled husband and wife. The other customers (all Vikings) first mumble then sing the praises of Spam, drowning out the disgruntled waitress. And that's it, really. No punch line. Just an improbable situation played with a straight face, hilarious dialogue, and impeccable timing. Such was the signature humor of Monty Python's Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. The ground-breaking show first aired on October 5, 1969. Sadly, it is no more. It has ceased to be. "It's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible." It is an EX-PROGRAM!

Dear Sirs - I wish to object most strenuously that Monty Python is dead. They can be seen regularly on PBS, BBC America and at hand puppet shows in my basement. Yours etc., Brigadier Reginald Prawn (Mrs.)
