While real life villains may not get (or deserve) sympathy, their fictional counterparts find it fiendishly easy to attract a fan club. From wicked literary antagonists like Professor Moriarty to dastardly comic supervillains like Lex Luthor to silver screen scoundrels like Darth Vader, there just wouldn't be much of a story without a big, bad embodiment of evil. Who would stay up all night turning pages by flashlight if Harry Potter's biggest struggle were fretting over a pimple or a prom date? Who would tune in to watch Batman challenge a parking ticket on the Batmobile? Villains give heroes purpose in their fictional lives, and they give the audience vivid characters who aren't burdened by mundane things like morality or logic -- characters who are clearly having a lot more fun than the good guys. And they provide an opportunity to safely entertain sinister thoughts, without all the planning and effort of actually trying to take over the world.
