From the lush elven paradise of Rivendell to the depths of dystopian Zion, artists known as matte painters take us to magnificent places in motion pictures. These experts of visual effects software carefully blend contrast and color to create scenery beyond what is possible in the physical world. Their work offers limitless artificial background possibilities -- from realistic images of the past, dark premonitions of the future, and sci-fi cityscapes, to armies of extras. Since the invention of the bluescreen film technique in 1964, the integration of live actors with computer-generated imagery or other backgrounds is almost seamless. The next time you watch a movie, see if you can tell the real surroundings from the fabricated backgrounds. If not, you can probably thank a matte painter.
