The Wilhelm Scream is one of Hollywood's many interesting tales -- a stock sound effect used by movie sound editors, usually as a death yelp from a minor character. Ben Burtt of Skywalker Sound has had a major hand in making the scream famous by inserting it into some of the most popular movies in history, including all six Star Wars episodes, the Indiana Jones trilogy, "Pirates of the Caribbean," and even animated features such as "Toy Story" and "A Goofy Movie." The scream can come from a character who is shot, falling, or even being eaten by an alligator. This is no ordinary movie scream, though. The Wilhelm is unique in that it sounds completely unnatural -- some even call it ridiculous -- which could be why so many sound editors have made it their hallmark when editing their films. Since 1951, the sound effect has been used in over 130 movies, and the list keeps growing. You may have never heard of, or noticed, the Wilhelm Scream before today, but once you hear it, you'll never forget it.
