Awarded to Paul D. Boyer and John E. Walker for their elucidation of the enzymatic mechanism underlying the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and to Jens C. Skou for the first discovery of an ion-transporting enzyme, Na+, K+-ATPase.
